UNDERSTANDING OTHER WORLDS
What is the habitable zone?
It is a range of distances where an appropriate atmosphere could allow liquid water on a planet’s surface.
A possibility, not a finding
Habitable-zone membership does not prove water, a suitable atmosphere or life. Atmospheric pressure, clouds, geology and stellar activity all affect actual conditions.
The star matters
A cooler, dimmer star has a closer habitable zone. Worlds in these close orbits may experience strong stellar activity and tidal effects. A planet’s distance from its star needs context.
Why this atlas is cautious
We do not assign habitability from size or equilibrium temperature alone. Such temperatures are simplified energy-balance estimates, not measurements of a solid surface.
